26 Miles Across the Sea . . . A Day at Catalina

IMG_7699
Most people travel to Catalina to rest and relax, but there is also a lot to learn there. Mr. Gregory selected sixteen students based on essays each student wrote and an interview. Those that were chosen left school at 8:00 and traveled to a dock to board a boat. Catalina is 22 miles away so it took us about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there. A few students got sea sick but most of us enjoyed the the trip.

When we go off the boat our tour guides were waiting for us. Our guides taught us a lot about the island. We traveled from Avalon, the city where most people visit, to the other side of the island. The other side has mountains, plants, beaches, and lots of wildlife.

When we got to the other side we did lots of hiking. On the way we saw the Catalina airport. It was much smaller than the Los Angeles Airport and only had one runway for planes to take off and land. We hiked some more and reached a beach called “Whale Tail.” It got its name because there are two big rocks that for the shape of a whale tail.

Our tour guide gave us an Oreo cookie but not just for a snack. He showed with the Oreo how the island was made. Earthquake forces lifted it up from the land under the ocean and Catalina was formed.

We learned about lot of different plants and found out that some of them can be eaten. One of them was a mustard plant. We jumped over ponds that little fish swimming around in them. We saw lots of animals
Fedde Knights at Medieval Times

7th graders headed back to the 11th century on May 25th, 2010. It was a wonderful opportunity to revisit a period of history that we had learned about earlier this year.

When we first entered the castle at Medieval Times, we had a chance to roam around and look at the horses, armor, and weapons.  After about thirty minutes,  King Ferdinand announce to us, “Let the tournament begin.”

When you first walk in you are given a card that tells you which knight you will be rooting for during the contests and battles. So when we entered the arena, we were seated in the white and black section.

Fedde was one of about ten other schools there that day, and we really cheered loudly for our knight as he battled and defeated the other knights until the final showdown with the green knight.

During the battles we were served a meal of  chicken, corn, garlic bread, and a big chocolate chip cookie.  We had to eat everything with our hands.

Our knight battled on horseback and in hand-to-hand combat and when he was the winner, he would be given carnations from the princess.  He would then toss those into our section.  Gabriella E., Areyse B., and Araceli G. each were tossed a carnation.

Our knight was finally defeated by the green knight.  But that was OK, because the true winners that day were the Fedde Knights who had a chance to experience life in Medieval Times while having a lot of fun!
